Trump Says Cuba Must “Make a Deal” with U.S. as Venezuelan Oil Supplies Are Cut Off

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Cuba to strike a deal with the United States, warning that the island nation will no longer receive oil or financial support from Venezuela.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump declared, “THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA — ZERO! I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.” He noted that Cuba had long relied on Venezuelan oil and funds but said that arrangement has now ended.

Venezuela has historically been Cuba’s largest oil supplier, often providing subsidized crude that has helped sustain the Cuban economy. U.S. actions in recent weeks— including tightened sanctions, seizures of Venezuelan oil shipments, and the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro—have effectively halted those supplies.

U.S. intelligence assessments describe Cuba’s economic and political situation as difficult, with key sectors like agriculture and tourism under strain from power shortages, trade sanctions, and systemic problems. The loss of Venezuelan oil and financial support could further weaken Cuba’s economy and governance.

The comments come amid heightened tensions following the U.S. operation in Venezuela and mark an escalation in pressure on the Cuban government to engage with the United States on new terms.
